about

“My approach to sculpture is based upon a deep respect for the natural world. Employing principles found in nature gives the work a visual structure that resonates familiarity, sensed by anyone who has walked through a forest or observed how water carves stone over time. I find inspiration in the possibility that art holds to renew a person’s ability to ‘see’.”

Roger W. Stoller

PUBLIC PLACES

A public artwork’s impact goes far beyond its physical presence. It’s a beacon that embodies the ideals of a community. It does not exist in isolation; it is inherently place based. Every sculpture exists in physical space, but not every sculpture creates a “sense of place”. Place is a unique identity cultivated by the integration of an artwork with its surroundings and social purpose. Purpose-driven artwork for the public should echo shared values. Each community has a unique spirit, and the art that will become part of a community is an opportunity to express and enhance that ethos. It’s therefore the artist’s job to explore and understand this ethos and express its essential nature in the art.

The Metal-Lace technique developed at the Studio is a highly versatile vocabulary of form from which original patterns are created, allowing layered meaning can be infused into the work. 3D computer modeling is used to develop underlying shapes that give dimension through simple geometric forms, most of which are cut away, leaving the lace pattern undulating in space. Involving local stakeholders to participate in the selection of imagery to be “woven” into the pattern connects the community to the art. Having a striking simplicity and unity when seen from a distance, upon closer viewing one’s interest is sustained by the detailed compositions and finishes. As a result, visitors see new things each time they look, like the experience of watching clouds.

One of the most fulfilling aspects is determining the ideal way to reflect the broad diversity of those who will be relating to the piece throughout its lifetime. The pictorial “seek & find” aspect of the work gives people of all ages and backgrounds something to relate to and have fun with.

STUDIO WORK

My internal drive leads me to develop forms the feel original and fresh. Natural manifestations and human creations throughout time are my primary sources of inspiration. The principles of sculptural design govern the approach I take in my work. Such fundamental matters as material, form, surface, proportion, scale, balance and meaning make up some of the important considerations for a given work.  My hope is that the completed work will inspire others in the creativity of their own lives.
